PAT DE GROOT

Pat de Groot (1930-2018) captured the sea and the sky’s ever-changing moods, and her artistic practice centered around painting this scene from her window. Each of her works presented a unique perspective, and her deep connection to the sea was evident. Her works, often appearing deceptively simple, have the quality of icons, capturing the essence of her reserved emotions and the life she had lived. Born in St John’s Wood, London, Pat was a wartime refugee to the US. In 1940, she and her younger brother were sent to New York by their American mother. De Groot attended the University of Pennsylvania, where she earned an English degree before moving to Paris to work for the Paris Review. By the 1980s, she had fully embraced her identity as an artist, focusing initially on seagulls and cormorants before turning her attention to the sea itself.

De Groot’s first solo exhibition was held at New York’s Pat Hearn Gallery, and in Provincetown, de Groot showed at Albert Merola Gallery. Her work has also been exhibited at Provincetown Art Association and Museum.
